A summary of the institutions that would produce this text, the target audience(s) it is aimed a end how the product is targeted at the the particular audience(s)
My Hollywood film poster would be made by Universal. However, my Film Noir would be made by Metro Goldwyn Mayer because MGM was one of the institutions that made Film Noir successful throughout the 1940's/1950's.
The target audience for Hollywood movies are much broader than Film Noir. Hollywood movies captivates a wider audience because it contains love, action and comedy which appeals to the modern day generation. Hollywood films are able to entertain a wide age range because of it's admired factors such as comedy which is popular around the globe, rather than just on country. Film Noir only attracts a small amount of people, with a restricted audience composition. It is most likely to attract older people, who liked and still treasure the old cinema days.
I made my poster interesting for a noir fan by including the main elements such as:
I made my modern Hollywood poster interesting by using modern day clothing and action that appeals to Hollywood fans. Making a modern day Hollywood poster was much more challenging than making a Film Noir poster as it has to meet a certain criteria, in order to appeal globally.
A brief description of any research and planning you carried out
I did research various posters and films, in order to make my poster reach the success criteria. I mainly focussed on Double Indemnity, as we had done a detailed study/analysis of the film in class. The reason I chose to look at Film Noir posters and look further in to the era, was primarily to analyse key points that would help me in creating my poster. Researching directed me in my photography work and editing. While looking at Film Noir posters I managed to learn the style and all the elements that sum up to make a suitable poster. These were things such as darkness, lust, crime, love etc.
When exploring Hollywood posters, I looked at films that were suitable for my main genre (romance/action/comedy). This involved searching films such as Hunger Games (action) and Silver Linings Playbook (comedy/drama/romance). I found these two films helpful as my poster consists of the same genres as the two films I used as an example.
An explanation of how codes and conventions have been used in the product to communicate particular representations and how meaning is made
My Noir poster represents the Noir genre as it consists of all the main elements need for a Noir movie. On my poster I added, a doomed hero, femme fatale, mystery, love, lust, danger, manipulation, seductive, a temptress woman and a dark gloomy background. All these components are essential for Film Noir posters as they give a clear representative of the genre and main story of the film.
My modern Hollywood poster contains several genres, to successfully attract a wide audience. The modern Hollywood poster I produced represents many genres: action, comedy, romance and drama. The background of my poster suggests that there is action, meeting the genre. The picture I took of my friend is suitable for my Hollywood poster as she is dressed in a modern way, meaning that it would appeal globally. Also, the mise-en-scene of my poster is equivalent to modern day Hollywood poster. The lighting, costume, props, make-up, hair and stars are all contemporary. The star names I used (Mila Kunis and Dave Franco) have appeared in recent Hollywood movies and are starring in upcoming movies. So, the actors would appeal to people globally and not just within a certain country.
An evaluation of the success of decisions and revisions made throughout the design process
Overall, I think both posters were successful in meeting the genres I had set for each poster. There were certain changes I had to make while editing and creating the Hollywood poster. For example, initially I had considered a different background for my modern Hollywood poster to the one I chose because when my poster was being generated, it didn't seem to fit in with the genre. I had thought of using equations as the background for my Hollywood poster, this seemed more suitable for a Sci-Fi genre when I put it to test.
The Film Noir poster I created at first was not to a high enough standard. This is why I created another poster and I am much more pleased with the result.
An evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses within the finished production.
I am pleased with the outcome of both posters. However, I think my modern Hollywood poster is not as good as my Film Noir Poster. I think I've managed to include most of the elements needed for a Noir poster. This may be due to the fact that, modern Hollywood has an extremely large audience and is more difficult to create it, in order for it too meet the success criteria.
I am please with my photography in both posters, as I managed to direct my friend who modelled for me, in a way that I thought would be suitable for the genre.
