FILM NOIR- Evaluation
As this was our first time filming in Film Studies, my group worked together to learn how to use different shots, angles, lighting and adapting to the green room. When filming, we learnt many practical and creative skills. While filming, I became familiarised with different shots, e.g close up, long shots, medium shots, and low angles and high angles and how they are a representative of that person's status. Also, I learnt that close up shots mark the notability of the object, or the emotion on the characters face.
My group used my SLR camera to shoot most scenes and we were successful in doing so. When working together as a group, we learnt how to use the greenroom in a way for the shots to sequel well when it came to editing and choosing a film noir background image. This meant that in terms of mise-en-scene, we created a good setting and lighting.
In the process of filming we developed in using technical skills for our work and ensured ourselves that the production material that we produced was sufficient in quantity and quality, in order to to edit and receive a good outcome.
We used props in the green room (e.g. Jack Daniels bottle, typewriter etc) for the green room to generate a archetype Film Noir atmosphere. Each scene we shot, turned out to look like a typical film noir film setting. Also, the clothes we wore were similar to what many actors and actresses wore in Film Noir movies such as Double Indemnity where men always wore suits and hats and women wore dresses, blouses, skirt, heels etc. -I think that we portrayed the fashion sense of 1940's/1950's quite well.
Most of the editing was done by Suleiman, as he chose to take the editing role in the group. All of the editing was done on Final Cut Pro, which was new as it was my first time using the software. Whilst editing, the rest of the group contributed by giving our view on each shot that we thought was not to a good enough standard or any aspects of the editing that we though needed to be changed. This occurred numerous times when editing and revising our work.
Initially, we all chose our tasks before we proceeded filming. However, while filming certain shots we'd have to help other with their jobs when not on the set of shooting. I found that during recording, although I was the femme fatale, there were scene that I wasn't apart of which meant I helped with camera work.
In terms of setting, we had the choice to work outside of school out of school hours but this was optional and meant that we would not have access to the facilities that we do at school. All of our recordings were within school grounds which slightly meant that it was limited. Although, I think we managed well with containing the appropriate backgrounds for a Film Noir movie, if I could repeat my work I think I'd slightly rethink the setting choices and would communicate with my group to work outside of school, to add more variety.
At the beginning of the film we got a shot of the doomed hero walking, which I thought would mark the intention, that he is walking towards something, possibly danger. When recording we had to over analyse scenes and the meaning of the beginning, climax, and the ending. We also had to make a clear judgement of what lighting had to be used in various shots and what darkness, lighting would represent.
Overall, I think my group did well in creating the Film Noir atmosphere and the challenges that came with it. If I could improve my work I'd choose a variable setting and possibly get more distinctive shots of the characters.
